The University of Tartu is the oldest and largest higher education institution in Estonia and has been the centre of Estonian academic life for almost four centuries. It is ranked in the top 1.2% of the world’s universities making it one of the leading universities in Northern Europe. It is the leading research university in Estonia and the only Estonian-language universitas – comprehensive university – in the world. Its competitive advantages are internationality, the quality of teaching and research, and diversity. They support research projects in four broad areas: natural and exact sciences (realia et naturalia), medical sciences (medicina), social sciences (socialia) and humanities (humaniora).

Role in INCA: The University of Tartu team is leading WP6, is the leader of certain tasks in WP1, WP2, WP3, WP4 and WP10, and is participating in different tasks of WP3 and WP8.

Piret Ehin

Piret Ehin is a Professor of Comparative Politics and Deputy Head of Research at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu (Estonia).

Piret holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Arizona (2002). Her main research interests include democracy, elections and voting behaviour, legitimacy and political support, European integration and Europeanization. More recently, she has also focused on trust in technology and remote internet voting. Her work has appeared in leading journals including the European Journal of Political Research, Journal of Common Market Studies, Cooperation and Conflict, Politics, Government Information Quarterly, Journal of Elections, Public Opinion and Parties, and the Journal of Baltic Studies. Piret serves as Program Director of Political Science PhD studies at the University of Tartu. She has supervised over 50 MA theses, three doctoral dissertations and several post-doctoral projects. She has extensive experience in leading and implementing large-scale research and capacity-building projects, including those funded by the European Union’s framework programs (Horizon 2020, Horizon Europe).

Liisa Talving

Liisa Talving is a Researcher in Comparative Politics at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu (Estonia).

Liisa holds a PhD in Political Science from the University of Tartu (2016). Her main research interests include public opinion, voting behaviour and democracy. Her latest work focuses on EU attitudes and populist support. Liisa has published in leading international journals such as Journal of European Public Policy, West European Politics and Electoral Studies. For several years, she has contributed to Freedom House’s Nations in Transit report which evaluates the state of democracy in the region stretching from Central Europe to Central Asia. Liisa has extensive experience in survey research, including coordinating the implementation on the European Social Survey in Estonia.  

Martin Mölder

Martin Mölder is a Researcher in Comparative Politics at the Johan Skytte Institute of Political Studies at the University of Tartu (Estonia).

Martin completed his PhD at the Central European University in 2017 and has since worked at the University of Tartu as a researcher in comparative politics. His main focus is parties and party systems, but through his interest in quantitative methods in general as well as statistical analyses of texts in particular, he has also worked on topics ranging from international relations to parliamentary speech. Of particular interest to him is public opinion and party support in the Estonian context. With regard to the latter, he is also a frequent commentator of political affairs in the Estonian media.
