SUMMARY:INCA at the Presentation of KVS Preadviezen 2025
DESCRIPTION:On 1 December\, the public launch event of KVS Preadviezen 2025 will take place in The Hague. KVS Preadviezen is an annual collection of expert policy reports published by the KVS\, the oldest association of economists in the Netherlands. \nINCA member Inge Graef of Tilburg University will attend the event\, as she has contributed to this year’s edition with an article on dependence on Big Tech. \nEach year\, the KVS commissions scholarly reports (known in Dutch as preadviezen) on a specific theme\, aiming to bridge academic insights and policy recommendations. The central theme of this year’s publication is “Openness in Times of Geopolitical Fragmentation.” \nInge Graef contributed a chapter titled “How to Make the Netherlands Less Dependent on Big Tech.” Drawing on research conducted within the INCA project\, she reviews the legislation adopted by Europe in recent years to control the power of major technology companies and addresses what the Netherlands can do to reduce the dependence of government organisations\, businesses\, and citizens on Big Tech. \nDuring the event\, the INCA member will also participate in a panel discussion on issues related to Big Tech\, alongside other authors of the collection\, officials from the European Commission\, and members of the House of Representatives. The session will be moderated by Maartje Schulz and Robert Dur.

DESCRIPTION:On November 27\, a joint international workshop on Infrastructures of Rent Extraction will take place in Bologna. This INCA event has been organized by the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Bologna and the Department of Contemporary History at Nova University Lisbon\, in collaboration with CoLABOR\, the University of Évora\, and FCT. \nThe workshop will explore the relationship between global infrastructures and practices of rent extraction\, both historically and in the contemporary global context. SUMMARY:INCA at the Cooperative AI Conference
DESCRIPTION:11–14 November\, three members of the INCA team will attend the Cooperative AI Conference\, the first global event dedicated to cooperatives and artificial intelligence. \nThis gathering will explore questions such as: “As AI reshapes our world\, who decides its future — and who gets left behind? Will AI be governed by a few\, or can worker-led models inspire its development to serve the many?”What role can cooperatives play in this transformation? \nBuilding on these questions\, the conference will explore how the international cooperative network\, social movements\, trade unions\, and solidarity economy initiatives can collaborate with policymakers to design programs that support workers and promote the development of equitable and democratic AI systems. \nIn this context\, on November 12\, Niccolò Cuppini (SUPSI)\, Mattia Frapporti (University of Bologna)\, and Maurilio Pirone (University of Bologna) will lead a workshop titled “Exploring Data Logistics and the Future of Cooperation.” It will present selected excerpts from the INCA documentary on the data revolution\, which is currently in its final stages of production. Following the screening\, a discussion will take place on these themes.

DESCRIPTION:On October 10\, a round table entitled “Participatory design of new digital platforms for the city: guidelines\, ethical best practices\, and a comparison of alternatives” will take place from 16:00 to 17:30 at Sala Anziani – Palazzo d’Accursio (Bologna). \nAs the final event of the INCA Open Innovation Laboratories (OILs) held in Bologna\, Barcelona\, and Bucharest\, the event\, moderated by Valentina Bazzarin\, data ethics expert and co-founder of Period Think Tank\, will begin by sharing the best practices and guidelines that have emerged over the past months from the work of the OILs. This task will be carried out by our colleagues Giorgia Romagnoli (Urbasofia) and Umberto Mezzacapo (Fondazione IU Rusconi Ghigi)\, together with the INCA coordinator Edoardo Mollona (University of Bologna). \nThis presentation will be followed by an interactive session with interventions from about ten experts from companies\, public\, and private organizations. The aim is to foster dialogue and reflect on the design of ethical\, sustainable\, and alternative practices to the big tech paradigm\, inviting the different stakeholders to discuss the impacts already generated (or that may arise) for people and cities. \nThe event is also framed as the final moment of the public program of the Data Materialities INCA Exhibition (which will close in Bologna on October 12)\, and once the round table is over\, attendees will have the opportunity to take a guided tour and conclude with an aperitif. \nThe event is free but requires registration via this link. \nCheck the full event program ⬇️

It will explore the historical marginalization of women’s work in the early days of computing. The research of both professionals recontextualizes a materialist and feminist reading of techno-accelerationism. \n\n\n\nIn parallel with the works exhibited in Data Materialities\, this conversation aims to highlight the potential of artistic practices\, which allow us to propose speculative structures from which to reposition the digital on a human scale\, shedding light on Data Materiality as a frame of reference for the contemporary study of technology. \n\n\n\nThe talk will be delivered in English. DESCRIPTION:On May 22\, as an activity of the Bucharest Open Innovation Lab\, a workshop entitled “Co-design space: platform creation and process governance” will be held. \nThe event\, organized by Urbasofia in collaboration with ADIZMB\, will take place in Bucharest at the Arcub – Subsol hall. DESCRIPTION:On 17 October\, there will be a talk entitled ‘Cables\, Data and Labour. How to Visualize Digital Capitalism’. Organised by several partners of the INCA project (UNIBO\, SUPSI\, and Fondazione IU Rusconi Ghigi)\, the coordinator Edoardo Mollona will be in charge of introducing the talk in which the speakers will be the 5 artists selected for the INCA exhibition to be produced during the 2025. \nDigital technologies are increasingly shaping the spaces\, temporalities and configurations in which we live together. Their use is pervasive and simultaneously invisible. Behind each touch on our smartphones\, there is an articulated and stratified overlapping of devices and services\, hardware and software like the cloud\, the AI\, data centres and fibre cables. They all contribute to shape a global dimension of connectivity which is not free from conflicts and tensions. \nArt and architecture have also been affected by this set of innovations we label as digital innovation. On the occasion of Big Tech and Counter-Technologies residency in Bologna\, 5 practitioners will meet the public to illustrate their perspective on how digital tech today can be approached through their artistic practice. With a critical focus on tech giants such as Google\, Amazon\, Meta\, Apple\, and Microsoft\, selected projects engage the materiality of techno-capitalism on micro\, meso to macro scales. Questions of labour\, logistics\, infrastructure and space thread each project together to pose the following: what is the spatiality of the digital? SUMMARY:INCA's findings at the 7th Social Boundaries of Work International Conference
DESCRIPTION:On 16-18 October\, the 7th edition of the Social Boundaries of Work International Conference will be held in Wroclaw. It is co-organized by INCA researchers from the University of Wrocław. \nUnder the title ‘Social Boundaries of Work. Critical Labour Studies in the Times of a Polycrisis’\, the conference is dedicated to analysing the relationship between academia and the world of work in the context of overlapping and reinforcing socio-economic crises. \nThe COVID-19 pandemic was not only a profound crisis of public health\, but also of public services and social security systems\, which have been under pressure from neoliberal reforms for years. The escalation of armed conflicts in Europe as a result of Russia’s large-scale attack on Ukraine only exacerbated the refugee movements that had been taking place for years. The post-pandemic reality is also marked by a cost-of-living crisis that has deepened existing social inequalities and the impoverishment of many groups of workers. \nWithin the programme\, on Thursday 17\, our colleagues Adam Mrozowicki\, Olga Gitkiewicz and Szymon Pilch (University of Wroclaw) will present INCA findings.

SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS for the V Forum of the International Sociological Association
DESCRIPTION:Call for papers. The deadline for submission is the 15th of October\, 2024\nThe INCA project team has organised a session to be held during the V Forum of the International Sociological Association\, to be celebrated in Rabat\, Morocco\, on 6-11 July 2025. \nThe session is organized by Adam Mrozowicki (University of Wroclaw) and Dora Fonseca (Colabor). The session description is as follows: \nInfrastructural Power of Gafam and Worker Power in the Platform Economy \nGAFAMs\, big tech platform companies such as Google (Alphabet)\, Amazon\, Facebook (Meta Platforms)\, Apple and Microsoft\, are pressuring national industrial relations systems everywhere. As infrastructural platforms\, these transnational companies provide essential infrastructures (both physical and digital)\, thus amassing great power. GAFAM operations are carried out by combining both direct investment and outsourcing and subcontracting GAFAM services. Outsourcing services allows GAFAM companies to indirectly influence industrial relations systems and mitigate the internal impact of the capital/labor conflict within their own business units by displacing these tensions to intermediary levels. It also allows GAFAM to circumvent national legal frameworks on labour standards\, in addition to the adoption of union-busting practices that disrespect the internationally recognized rights (by ILO) of freedom of association and collective bargaining. Labour conflicts have been on the rise in several GAFAMs’ sites\, bringing to the fore debates on the impacts of GAFAMs on national industrial relation systems\, and evince different strategies from industrial relations actors\, both traditional and new. Labour movements’ power resources and innovation capacity are being tested\, and different responses and outcomes might be expected according to the varieties of trade unionism at stake. SUMMARY:CALL FOR PAPERS: Global Infrastructures: Aesthetic Power and Affective Networks in the (Post-)colonial Present
DESCRIPTION:Call for papers. The deadline for submission is September 10\, 2024\nSince the nineteenth century\, an ever-more complex web of roads\, railways\, airports\, oil pipelines\, shipping lanes\, fibre-optic cables\, tunnels\, aqueducts\, gas networks\, and electrical systems sustains and supports modern life. Built above\, through and below the ground\, infrastructural systems constitute foundational sociotechnical assemblages of modern societies: a series of installations that shape both biological and social life. A number of scholars –working across several disciplines– have begun interrogating the aesthetic dimension of these infrastructural systems\, pointing to their ability to induce a “feeling of modernity”. \nA collaborative workshop organized by the Institute of Contemporary History at Nova University Lisbon and the University of Bologna\, and partially funded by INCA\, intends to focus on infrastructures as semiotic and aesthetic vehicles. It promotes a collective investigation of the aesthetic and affective dimension of global infrastructures\, emphasizing how it interacts with colonial projects\, capitalist ventures\, and cultural superstructures. Learn more about the workshop here. \nWe particularly welcome contributions focusing on questions such as: \n\nWhat ideological messages are embedded in different infrastructural systems from the nineteenth century to the present?\nHow can historical approaches help us rethink the relationship between global infrastructures\, imperialism and ideology?\nWhat is the affective dimension associated with different infrastructural materials from steel to glass\, plastics and concrete?\nWhat has been the impact of climate change and the ecological crisis on global infrastructures and their aesthetics?\nWhat aesthetic forms and future-looking imaginaries are embedded in contemporary infrastructures and digital platforms?\n\nPapers dealing with all these aspects are welcome\, from an interdisciplinary perspective. Interested scholars are invited to send a long abstract between 300 and 500 words and a short bio to policante@fcsh.unl.pt and/or to mattia.frapporti2@unibo.it by the 10th of September 2024. \nThe final workshop will take place on November 28th\, 2024\, at the Nova University of Lisbon.
